Park at Skylands New Jersey Botanical Garden in the first parking lot, Lot A. Head south toward the botanical gardens on their wide, groomed paths. Watch for the white blazes of the Crossover Trail and turn left and walk on a road until you see the green blazes of the Halifax Trail on your left at about .5 miles. Turn here and start this deep but switchbacked trail up the mountain for another .5 miles to a trail junction. The summit of Defiance will be on your left but there are steep cliffs between you and the top. Turn right on the red blazed Ringwood Ramapo Trail which will take you "around the back" of the peak and then up to the summit. A large outcropping marks the top in about .25 miles but there are no views. Walk back to the trail junction and turn left heading south toward a nice viewpoint. When done head back to the trail junction. Some will continue on to hike Ilgenstein Rock and other Ramapo peaks but I returned to the car. Before driving away it is worthwhile walking around the grounds of the botanical gardens and Skylands Manor.
