As with all bushwhacks, there are many different ways to approach South Bearpen and some may require permission from local landowners. The peak itself is on private land just outside the DEC property. There is also DEP land access but it is from a private road. Some people bushwhack over from South Bearpen while others come in from Redkill Ridge. Both of these routes STILL require permission since the peak is private!
Coming in from the DEP land is probably the shortest route although it is steep and there may be areas of prickers in season. The route from Red Kill Road may allow you to pick up some woods roads but these are often overgrown with prickers. Aiming for the Col between the southern bump and the middle bump is one option. Once on the ridge the going is relatively flat but you may have to fight through prickers if no path or road is found. The total distance can be under 3 miles.
