Cradle Rock Ridge Mountain is one of the more western CHH peaks located in the Town of Hardenburgh in Ulster County. It is only accessible by bushwhacking. One way to hike this peak is to park at Alder Lake. Alder Lake is a popular destination but the entrance road is poorly maintained. A vehicle with a higher clearance and 4 wheel drive may be a good idea. From Livingston Manor (Exit 96 from I86) drive north and west on Old Route 17. Turn right on Beaverkill Road and continue on this road through the hamlets of Lew Beach and Turnwood. Turn left on Alder Creek Road just after Turnwood. At the end of this road bear to the right to go to Alder Lake. Park in the parking area. As you walk toward the lake the stonework remains of the Coykendall Mansion will be on your left. Take a minute to enjoy the lake. The rise to your right is Your destination, Cradle Rock Ridge.

Walk across the dam at the outlet to Alder Lake and pick up a path, trail or road that loops around the lake visiting many informal campsites. At some point start walking southeast and UP to gain elevation toward the top of the ridge. The woods are mostly open with some rocky and steeper areas alternating with flatter hiking. There are a few cliff bands but these are easily negotiated. The ridge flattens out and it is hard to see where the highest spot may be. Once you are on this flatter part you may have to walk as much as .5 miles to hit all the possible high spots. Once at the "top" wander around until you feel you have hot the peak and then claim victory! Return the way you came or head north and slightly west and DOWN. You will eventually intersect the inlet stream to Alder Lake. Cross this stream to pick up the Millbrook Ridge Trail which leads back to the Alder Lake Loop Trail. At the junction turn right to continue on around the other side of the lake and back to your car.
